Practice (currency) hours

Practice hours—also known as currency hours—refer to the number of hours an occupational therapist (OT) has worked within the scope of their profession over a defined period of time. These hours help show that the OT continues to maintain the knowledge and skills needed to provide safe and competent care.

Meeting practice hours requirement

Applicants must meet the practice hours requirement based on their specific registration situation.

Renewal or LMSA transfer applicants

You must have actively practiced as an OT for at least 600 hours within the three years immediately before your PEICOT registration renewal or if you are already registered in another Canadian province or territory and applying to register in PEI.

New graduates

As a new graduate, you are considered current for 18 months after your graduation date. If you begin employment within those 18 months, you are granted an additional 12 months (for a total of 30 months from graduation) to complete 600 practice hours.

Re-entry applicants

If you are returning to practice, you must have successfully completed a refresher or re-entry program within the 18 months immediately before applying for registration activation.
