What is Occupational Therapy?

Occupational therapists are health professionals who work with people of all ages, when challenged by physical or mental disability, to help maintain or improve their ability to participate in their day-to-day living skills. The goal of occupational therapy is to minimize or prevent the effects of these disabilities on people's lives, thereby enabling them to carry out their lifes roles as independently as possible.

Qualifications of Occupational Therapists:

  • University educated (many hold post-graduate degrees)
  • Completed a minimum of 1000 hours of supervised clinical fieldwork
  • Have passed the national certification examination before they are eligible to practice
  • Practitioners in P.E.I. must be registered with the Prince Edward Island Occupational Therapists Registration Board.

How can Occupational Therapy Services be Accessed?

  • Physician's referral - for all services provided within and outside the hospital
  • setting.
  • Self-referral - clients and their caregivers can self-refer in Prince Edward Island. The Prince Edward Island Occupational Therapists Registration Board maintains a list of private practicioners, please contact us if you would like this information.

What if I have a Complaint about an Occupational Therapist?

If you have a complaint about an occupational therapist you should contact the Registrar of the Board by e-mail or letter. For a complaint to be pursued, it must be provided in writing to the board. Complaints must also include your name and address, the name of the occupational therapist, and details about the event (such as the date, time, place and name of any other persons involved).

The Board has the responsibility for investigating and taking action on complaints or information that is brought to their attention.
